Road to Success Reading 20 minutes a day, 5 days a week
The Road to Success program is a literacy initiative that truly motivates students to read everyday. The program is a collaboration of several business leaders who want to make a difference! Here's how it works:
Four (4) bikes are going to be given away at the end of the school year to (4) lucky students!!!
Read with your child for 20 minutes a day, 5 days a week.
Every 100 minutes your student reads enters their name into the drawing for one of the bikes. The more your student reads, the better their chances.
Each teacher has entry coupons for the children to fill out when they read 100 minutes. Let Mrs. Anderson know if you need additional coupons. The children will have an opportunity to deposit their drawing coupons in the container once a month.
Teachers will collect the reading minutes from students once a month.
Students can track their reading minutes on their class reading calendars.
Every student will receive several reading reminders and incentives during the year to encourage participation.

Timothy Ering, Illustrator for the Tale of Desperaux, Visits Amelia Earhart and Wasatch
Timothy Basil Ering, creator of the little mouse with large ears, visited Amelia Earhart and Wasatch Elementary Schools. Ering told students about how he grew up and how the ocean, wildlife and landscapes of Cape Cod, Mass. helped to inspire the drawings and characters in the books he illustrated as well as those he authored.
"There are so many cool things out there, you just have to look for them," Ering said. "The shape of a clam, the sharp pointy teeth of a shark and the beautiful sunset over the ocean have inspired zillions of drawings and characters for me."
Ering also taught students to never give up or lose sight of their dreams, even if hard challenges come their way. Ering kept a copy of a rejection letter he received and then showed students all of the many things he accomplished after receiving that letter. He published several of his own books and went on to illustrate many more.
"You can’t ever give up," Ering said. "You’ll never, ever know what can happen if you do!"
It was a real treat to have Ering visit so many elementary school children in the area. His enthusiastic and friendly demeanor charmed many of the students, and all of them wanted to give him a high five and express their new desire to be an illustrator when they grow up.

The Utah Flash Supports Reading at Amelia
Amelia Earhart Elementary received a surprise visit from the Utah Flash, the NBA D League Team, to discuss the importance of reading. One of the Flash players talked with the students about why reading is so essential, and then ten students were quizzed by the same player to see how well they understood the message. Each student knew all of the answers and expressed their own reasons for why reading is important. Fox, the Flash's mascot, gave these ten students and everyone in the school tickets to the next home game for having such a good understanding of the importance of reading. When asked about the assembly, Mrs. Hansen, the school Facilitator said, "It is important for students to see people who are successful in many areas and have a love of reading." Amelia Earhart students and staff had a lot of fun with the Utah Flash and are appreciate the time and generosity the team gave to the school.
The mission of Amelia Earhart Elementary is to promote lifelong literacy and citizenship in each child through a united effort with parents, educators, and community in a quality-learning environment, with a well trained and highly motivated staff using appropriate technology and instructional methods
